With the spooky season approaching, I thought I would highlight a number of new or upcoming horror movies that you may or may not enjoy. As much as I love the genre, there have been a lot of stinkers of late and I have been left with the feeling of dissatisfaction when finally I got to see movies that I “should have” enjoyed. Why am I doing this on a wargaming blog? Well, this movie genre feeds the imagination of many gamers such as myself, as well as game manufacturers and miniature companies, all of us involved seek to either replicate a good movie we’ve seen, or inspire the creative juices to produce great minis and games. Even the crappiest movies can bring a great deal of new ideas to the gaming table!
So, we come to the list. I am going to start with a few anticipated films coming soon.
Ok, I’m not a huge fan of the first one, the game was alright, but just alright, nothing great. The film was a tragedy. I remember going to the cinema with my partner to see it, hoping I was going to get a treat. The result was I ended up laughing at most of it. It was just cack. I know there are loads of people out there that liked the movie, hey, I’m not going to argue about it, maybe they just were fans of the games or just coming into the franchise for the first time. What ever your or my opinions are, I hope that the new movie is an improvement on the last. Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean reprise the roles from the first, while Carrie-Anne Moss and Malcolm McDowell add to the cast. Here’s a brief blurb from IMDB:
“Heather Mason and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand, Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by horrific nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her forever.”
Will it be any good? My thoughts are, not really, don’t ever believe the hype. I may end up eating my words, and I do hope so.
It is set for a 31st October release in the UK
THE EVIL DEAD REMAKE
Why Hollywood types are obsessed with remaking everything is anyone’s guess, the news that the remake of the Evil Dead is considered heresy to some die hard fans of the original. Being a long time fan of the first film (I saw it when I was five, I blame my brother Paul for my twisted love of the genre, who made me sit through many a Video nasty in the early 80’s!! Shame on you Bro!!)
This is a total reboot, and as far as we are aware, will not have Bruce Campbell reprising his role as Ash. Not that that is a bad thing, the guy is knocking on a bit now, and probably not up for the role (However, why no one ever made an Evil dead 4 that was planned is anyone’s guess, still the various games that were released that starred Campbell voicing Ash were a good comprimise!)
“In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.”
There seems to be no sign of Ash, Scott or Lynda, nor the others from the original and now replaced with Mia, olivia, Eric, David and Natalie! This one I am predicting to be a real hummer, but it has a chance as its screenplay is written by Sam Raimi himself, so who knows. Hopefully it’ll be more of a sequel than a remake, and might even feature a cameo from Campbell too!
Release date of April 2013
There have been so many problems with this film, I am surprised that it will ever come out at all. Based on Max Brooks‘ novel, some say that it has little or no relation to the original book at all. Its been hampered by script rewrites, budget problems, stars quitting and having hissy fits etc. Plus starring Brad Shitt Pitt in the leading role, this is another film that looks like its going to be shit. It’s a shame they mess around with decent books and ideas. All the pictures I have seen from behind the scenes just seem to be loads of people running. That might be OK for a Godzilla film, but I will eat my hat (If it’s a food based hat that is) if it turns out a good movie that shines above the countless other zombie movies available already!
release date of 12th June 2013
There are many people who still have nightmares about Tim Curry’s performance of “Pennywise the Clown” in the TV version of IT. Killer clowns are cool. While I haven’t read the original book the movie is based on, folks have told me, the real horror and details were left out of that version, with the Old one/spider creature at the root of the story wasn’t really explored or portrayed right like in the book. News is that there is a new version in the works. So does that mean with the reboot these things will be addressed? Well lets hope so, especially with the effects that we have now. There is always a chance that they will cock it up in the terms of how accurate they stick to the story, or decide to take it in another direction altogether. The release date for the movie is penciled in for sometime in 2013.
THE TOXIC AVENGER REBOOT
Some may remember this shlock franchise from way back, from the infamous TROMA films, renown for their cheesy low budget horror films of the 80’s and 90’s. Toxie was their flagship character, a weedy janitor turned crime crusader when he was transformed by toxic waste. I do admit to a love of all things TROMA, they had a healthy love of gore, and a tongue in cheek humour that never took itself seriously, plus they had almost no budget on many of their films and that gave the movies a real B movie feel. Well, Toxie is set to return in 2013 with a reboot, and its rumoured to have John Travolta on board. whether he is the main character or villain is unsure (These are rumours after all, just like his shady private life!) The blurb is almost the same as the original:
“Set in Tromaville, New Jersey – a small American town, terrorized by criminals. Among the residents of Tromaville is Melvin, a nerdy emaciated janitor at the local health club. A gang of thugs devise a cruel hoax that goes horribly wrong as Melvin is cast through a third story window into a vat of hazardous toxic waste. However, an unexpected metamorphosis takes place. As the chemicals take hold of his body, Melvin turns into the Toxic Avenger, doer of good, and brutal mauler of evil.”
Again the release date for the movie is sometime in 2013
These are just a small selection of horror movies coming soon, I will try and keep up to date on any news of these and other stuff of interest with news and releases. Lets hope they are not all a bag of shite!

World War Z could have been awesome. So very, very awesome. Luckily, we will always have the book, and if you want something fun, try and find the audio book version of it. they don’t do the whole thing, but what they do is ruddy marvelous.

To be honest, anything that has Brad Pitt in really puts me off, when i heard that he was in it, I was gutted. I think I’ll just read the original instead of going to the cinema when it comes out!!
